Have you ever had a thought that just
kept repeating itself in your head? Or perhaps a
song that kept playing over and over. You may have
been told that it is all in your mind. Actually,
it is more accurate to say that it is all in your
spleen.
The spleen is roughly the sized of a clenched fist
and is Located in the abdomen between the 9th and
11th rib. It has many functions but the three most
important are:
(a) digestion.
The spleen is responsible for transformation and
transportation of food; that is it separates what
is nutrition and what is useless and takes them
to the appropriate areas.
(b) Production of blood
and
(c) Key component of immunity/immune
system. ===========================

When the spleen is weakened, those
three keys are can be affected. One of the simple
signs that the spleen is not as strong as what is
needed is the aforementioned - repeated thoughts.
Even one's voice becomes "sing-songy;" that is one
would tend to talk in a rhythmic, paced voice much
like singing a song versus speaking. How does the
spleen become weakened? On the physical level, excessive
ingestion of sugar/sweets is the number one reason.
Over consumption of dairy is a close second. On
the emotional levels, over-work, over-worry and
over- thinking. If now you are saying "That's me!"
there are a number of things that can be done to
correct the imbalance. Start with diet. Anything
that is yellow, brown or golden will be food specific
for the spleen. Examples include yellow squash,
pineapples, yams pears, brown rice, corn, butternut
squash, nuts, sunflower seeds and butter are examples.
Pungent vegetables and spices are also high beneficial
such as onion, leek, black pepper, ginger, fennel
and cinnamon. The spleen likes to be kept warm so
foods that are warming by nature are recommended.
Be cautious of excessive ingestion of anything cold.
Finally, late-night eating and continually overeating
will significantly weaken the spleen. The nutritional
supplements that strengthen the spleen are herbs.
The major ones (in order of importance) are:
1- Raspberry
leaf extract
2- Parsley
3- Camomile
If you have access to a Chinese herb store, there
is a famous formula called Si Jun Zi Tang which
translates as "4 Gentleman Decoction" that is one
of the most popular and effective formulas in the
history of herbal medicine. The four "gentleman"
or ingredients are Ginseng, Atractylodis, Poria
and Licorice (usually honey fried). It is an outstanding
formula to strengthen the spleen and provide more
"Qi" to the system.
