Greetings,
Again, I would like to welcome the
continuing flow of new people and express my thanks
for your help in providing new email address. Most
appreciated to say the least. Please KEEP THEM COMING!!
Today's eNewsletter is Part 2 of Uncommon Treatments
in Common Medicine. Last week, we covered 4 new
treatments involving the heart, hip and knees. Here
are 3 more:

The Sugar Battle continues. The corn
lobby says no but nutritionists have long noted
that high-fructose corn syrup used to sweeten soft
drinks is one of the reasons so many kids are overweight.
In a recent study at the U. of Cincinnati, mice
that drank fructose laced water at less food, gained
more weight and put on 90% more body fat than those
who drank only water. Conclusion: Corn syrup and
all of its variations contribute to increased fat
storage.

- Instead of repairing your ACL (ligament in the
knee) with a cadaver tendon or your own hamstring
tendon which is very common now, TRI or Tissue Regeneration
Inc., wants to re-grow it. TRI has worked with Tufts
University to develop a biodegradable silk to replace
a torn ACL. Cells from the body "impregnate" the
silk graft and eventually form new ligament tissue.
The silk ultimately clears after the ACL regenerates.
- Severe arthritis or major traumas to the ankle
are typically treated by fusing the ankle joint
which of course, limits motion significantly. The
other typical treatment is to replace this region
with metal and plastic (ankle). Neither has been
particularly effective. Now -- bone and cartilage
transplants. The injured joint is removed or shaved
down, and the healthy donor bone is attached via
screws. The transplant behaves more like a normal
ankle, allowing the person to resume activity.

In February of 2006, I will be doing
a 100 mile bike ride to help with the research and
treatments for diabetes, as part of the American
Diabetes Association. Your donations would be most
appreciated for this valuable cause. Please cut
and paste the following link for more information.

- Finally, researchers at MIT and Mass. General
Hospital have created an injectable gel tha could
speed the repair of torn cartilage. The hyaluronic
acid gel stimulates the growth of new cartilage
when injected into the damaged areas. Animal studies
have already begun.
Until next week.
To your health,
