Greetings,
Today's enewsletter is part 2 of The
Knees. Two weeks ago, we covered some of the common
ailments and powerful treatments for the knees.
Today we will dispell tthe most common myth regarding
the knees -- Running (or any rigorous activity)
causes knee problems and arthritis. ________________________________________________

On the surface, it may sound logical
that running over time can cause knee problems.
After all, most mechanical factions do break down.
Cars do. Lawnmovers do. Even toothbrushes need to
be replaced due to repeated use. Why would we think
differently? Fortunately the body is very different.
It is not mechanical, but rather BIO-mechanical.
It is a composed of living tissue, tissue that actually
grows stronger when used. How does this apply to
running?

A study was launched in 1984 to measure
the effects of running. All participants were at
least 50 years of age when the study started. Every
5 years, detailed analysis has taken place. The
newest updates were published in "Arthritis Research
and Therapy" journal. The hypothesis was that running
would create damage through accumulated trauma,
with runners having about 10X the amount of damage
compared to the control group. The results however
were much different. The reseachers concluded that
runners experience at least 25% LESS musculoskeletal
pain, trauma or damage to the knee joint (as well
as ankles and hips). The joint was more stable and
had less injuries and "wear and tear." So what causes
knee problems? The #1 reason for knee problem? Obesity.
#2 reason?
Lack of activity. In my practice over
the years, I have also noticed an emotional component
to activity, any type of physical exercise/activity
(which is not surprising considering the massive
amount of information on this subject). People who
are active, people who are presented with a challenge
and take it on are the ones who are healthier, happier
and yes, even more successful than those on the
other end of the scale. It may be the best prevention
and treatment we have or will ever create. What
is the best activity or exercise? The one that you
love because that is the one that you will do.
Until next week.
