*** Dr. Orman's Optimal Health eNewsletter ***

Greetings,

Thank you for the heavy volume of kind comments and the interesting questions based upon last week's eNewsletter. It is always a pleasure to hear such creative questions and diverse viewpoints. Today, I will address the most commonly asked questions.

Q: My understanding is that you must burn 3500 calories to drop one full pound of fat. Is this the case?

A: This is only partly true and does not address the most important aspect. While physiology says that 3500 calories equals one pound of fat, the other side of the coin is that you must burn this amount WITHOUT compromising your metabolic rate. You may be the type of person who eats like a bird and exercises intensely but never drops a pound. Why would this occur? Too few calories and excessive expenditure of energy creates a metabolic slowdown, resulting in a zero sum gain. In other words, you work very hard, eat very little and they cancel each other out. Stick with the 4-6+ small meals per day. This coupled with a quality exercise program always works.

Loss of appetite? Zinc is the mineral for balancing the appetite. It is also one of the major minerals to enhance immunity and is a must for the prostate. Take zinc in chelated form only and ideally, by itself and it does not mix well with other minerals.

Q: I read that there are machines that target the upper abs and some that target the lower abs. Which is better?

A: Go to any anatomy book and try looking up "upper abs" and "lower abs." There is only one long muscle called the rectus abdominis, connecting your sternum to your pubic bone. It is impossible to selectively develop a portion of a single muscle due to the way your muscles are hooked up to your brain. (The term is called noncontiguous innervation.) The claim that a machine can "target" an area are false.

Q: I got a kick out of your "puppy approach to life" comment. I totally agree and never really looked at it this way. But I get so depressed some times that I cannot do it. Suggestions?

A: We will address depression in next week's eNewsletter. Here is a quick preview:

1- If physically based, most of the time it is a blood deficiency.

2- If psychologically based, consider Bach remedies

3- If all else fails, do something for someone else. Break the "internal loop" that is occuring.

To your health,

Dr. David Orman
