This week, we are going to focus
on a substance called Calcium D-Glucarate (CDG).
CDG is a botanical extract found in
products such as apples, oranges, grapefruits, brussels
sprouts and broccoli. Scientists have noted that
it appears to protect against cancers and other
degenerative diseases in a manner different than
the traditional antioxidants which include Vitamin
C, folic acid, carotenoids and others. One of the
ways in which the body eliminates toxins and hormones
such as estrogen is by attaching glucuronic acid
to them in the liver and excreting this "mixture"
via the bile. The process looking like this: Beta-glucuronidase
is a bacterial enzyme that breaks the bond, the
hormone or toxin that is released is available to
be reabsorbed into the body instead of being excreted.
An elevated beta-glucuronidase activity is associated
with an increased risk for cancers and hormone released
problems such as fibroids, prostate illnesses and
breast releated diseases.

By taking CDG, the activity of beta-glucuronidase
is limited. The body becomes more effecient in ridding
itself of the various toxins and excess hormones
that might stimulate the growth of tumors or cancers.
Studies involving animals have shown that CDG supplementation
prevents the development of various cancers. In
particular, since the growth of most breast cancers
is stimulated by estrogen, researches at Memorial
Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and other major institutions
began conducting research with CDG for the prevention
and the treatment of breast cancer. Preliminary
results have been very promising to say the least.
CDG is available in capsules and tablets and a recommended
daily intake is between 200 and 400mg. Treatment
dosages are 3-6 times higher. There are no known
side effects but certain hormone-based drugs may
adversely interact with CDG.
